Furlough? No problem! Josh uses downtime to get the ingredients for a great career


Time and time again, apprentices being tutored by Swatpro Academy have proved that lockdown hasn’t meant they were locked out of learning.

One of the latest to qualify, Josh Hack has passed his End Point Assessment (EPA) as level 2 Commis Chef at the Toorak Hotel in Torquay.

Josh’s training was not easy, as the TLH group which owns the Toorak was forced to furlough him along with many other employees when hospitality venues were forced to close.

“It was tough,” admits Josh, “But cooking at home and looking up recipes was a lot easier with all the time on my hands I had.”

Josh’s focus was helped by his tutor/mentor from Swatpro, Del Anning, who kept him prepared for the EPA with regular calls as well as distance tuition and video demonstrations.

“At every step and every question I had, he helped massively. He made sure I was getting all the help I needed. I have had a lot of guidance,” Josh enthuses.

Del is delighted Josh has proved what a solid chef he is by passing all 4 of the modules he needed to qualify: “We are all proud of him and our other hospitality learners who have shone in these most difficult of times.”

Now back working in the Toorak, Josh is equally thrilled: “It was the best news since my baby was born!”

Swatpro Academy’s individual approach to tutoring and regular contact with employers and learners has proven once again that whatever obstacles are placed in the way, apprentices can continue to progress and qualify with life-long skills.
